Hi Newbie again. i am curious what most of you do with glue squeeze out. I have heard of many ways to get rid of it. I am looking to keep the top/ back as clean as possible (Like who isn't) A) my classical teacher uses a wet toothbrush and scrubs it when still wet B) some let it dry a little and chisel/scrape it off when a bit solid C) do any of you put tape down next to the brace and then remove the tape and squeeze out together. thanks Andy |

I use a plastic putty knife with a wet rag to clean it up as it comes out. This works pretty good. I have also seen guys that let the squeez out set a little then scrape it off. Find a technique that works for you john hall |

I usually use what Terry uses and that is just thin stock cut at an angle. Also, a razor blade works great in tight spots. Tracy |

As a rule I never touch squeeze out with water or a damp cloth. I Always wait a few min than scrape off with out the mess. If to much moisture is applied to,.... or around the glued area it can effect the bonding . As you gain experience,... your glue applications will become more precise ,...thus eliminating almost all squeeze out and the clean up hassles. |

I agree that you don't want to use a soaking wet rag. Damp is best but I also like the leather stage scrape and pull. |

My problem with using water to clean up is that (besides the obvious problem of getting the wood wet) there is a chance the water will seap under the brace and weaken the glue in that are. I wait 15 minutes and scrape it clean. It's not really even work just a quick step to go through. Look at Gilbert's modified chisel on the taylor video (thread below). I'm going to make one of those today. |

I wait about 10-15 min and use 1/4 chisel and a single edge box cutter razor blade with a scraping burr burnished on it for real tight corners. I put tape over most of the blade, leaving only about 1/4" of the blade exposed. If titebond 10-15 min if hide about 5-10 min. |

I apply just enough glue so that I get a minimum amount of squeeze out. I sometimes let the glues set for 10-15 min and then scrape. But lately I have just let the glue completely dry and then remove it with a sharp chisel. If the chisel is good and sharp the glue can be removed fairly easily and cleanly. I found it hard to do a good job of wiping/scraping the glue when it was all clamped up on my go deck. Josh |

Another problem I have run into with using damp cloths is that when you reapply moisture it causes the leathery glue to smear a bit not leaving the top as clean as it could be if you just scraped it off cleanly with a blunt chisel and a couple of quick swipes from a razor blade. |

I really like the way hide glue cleans up. If you let it sit for about 10 minutes, give or take, when you go to clean it up it just balls up and rolls off the wood. I agree with Lance that premature clean up makes a huge mess. John |

I agree with John, I used hide glue to brace my last top. I would wait about 10 minutes after it would gel, then use a scraper to score the side the brace, then the bottom of the brace, then just peel the glue off. It usually come off in one solid piece. So easy! Tracy |
